Dear old Rupert Davies could hardly believe it when he was asked to record an LP following the enormous success of his BBC 'Maigret' series in Sweden.

In common with many fine actors he was at first noticeably apprehensive at the prospect of singing in a recording studio. If you listen to the tracks you will hear that he adopted a different character in his approach to performing each song.

He was experiencing a problem, however, with 'Underneath The Arches' and I casually suggested that he might find presenting the tramp's character easier if he wore appropriate make-up and costume.

To my great surprise he took my remark seriously and during the session he donned full vagrant's garb and greasepaint!

There wasn't a dry seat in the studio.
